Our librarian, Mrs. Lonna Pierce, was a guest on WSKG Radio's "Off the Page" program on November 10th, for the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. She spoke with host, Bill Jakers, and Michael Davis, author of "Street Gang: A History of Sesame Street."  The hour was fascinating, as listeners called and wrote in email comments and memories of growing up with the premier children's TV program.  Mrs. Pierce was invited as an early literacy expert and mother of five children who watched Sesame Street in their youth. Unfortunately, technical difficulties prevented a promised, on-air conversation with Big Bird and Bob McGrath, original cast members.  Listeners did learn how the ground-breaking program began, how Jim Henson and his Muppets were integral to the success of the show, and how cast members truly care deeply about children. It is not an act. Joan Gantz Cooney, originator of the visionary program, deserves much credit for the continued and future success of Sesame Street. Mrs. Pierce reports that it was exhilarating being a radio "talking head", ruled by the clock and the engineer, while wearing headphones and conversing with a famous author. WSKG personnel, Bill Jakers and Jackie Stapleton, couldn't have been more welcoming and generous.  What a hoot!
