Six BCSD Schools Earn Distinction for Nutrition and Wellness

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has recognized six BCSD schools as Gold Level Team Nutrition Schools in the HealthierUS School Challenge. The Challenge is a voluntary school nutrition and wellness initiative for schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program.

The six schools: Coolidge, Franklin, MacArthur, Mann, Roosevelt and Wilson, have demonstrated the attributes of the HealthierUS School Challenge: being enrolled as a Team Nutrition School, offering reimbursable lunches that demonstrate healthy menu planning practices and principles of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, providing nutrition education to students, providing the opportunity for physical education, maintaining an average daily participation of 70 percent or higher for reimbursable lunches, and adhering to guidelines established by the FNS for foods served and sold in schools outside of the National School Lunch Program.

The awards are effective for a two year period. A plaque and banner recognizing each school as a Gold Team Nutrition School will be sent in the coming weeks. Congratulations to Food Service Director Mark Bordeau, his staff, and all those who helped to make this happen!
